What tools are available to me on Sketchfab to disallow use of my artwork for training generative AI programs?
If you would like to identify your work as prohibited from use by generative AI programs, you can take one of two approaches:
- Tag your uploads individually by adding the "NoAI" tag in the Model Properties window. Adding this tag here will add the "NoAI" HTML meta tag to the upload. To add it instantly, just click the suggested lowercase "noai" tag that appears below the text box.
- Tag all past and future uploads with the "NoAI" meta tag by activating "NoAI" tagging in the Account section of your profile settings.
What is an HTML meta tag?
An HTML meta tag is text that is viewable in the code of a web page and can be read by search engines, web services, browsers, and human beings. Meta tags are how, for example, the title, description, and image of a web page are displayed as a preview when you share a link in a text message or social media.
How does the NoAI meta tag disallow use of my work by generative AI programs?
The "NoAI" HTML meta tag is a signal that generative AI programs accessing your work can read and identify; once they have identified it, they can then "skip" the model to which it is attached.
Our upcoming Terms of Use update, which will go into effect March 23, 2023, will prohibit use of content tagged with NoAI in datasets for, in the development of, or as inputs to generative AI programs.
What is Sketchfab's approach to AI-generated artwork?
Sketchfab does not prohibit uploads that have been created, in full or in part, with AI tools. The Sketchfab community has always been a group of experimenters, trying out new workflows and finding clever solutions to difficult 3D problems. While some in our community are not interested in using AI in their work or exploring models made with AI, others are dabbling here and there with AI, trying out new things to see what can be achieved and using Sketchfab as a robust way to host their 3D files.
Beginning on March 23, 2023 with our Terms of Use and License Agreement updates, all creators who offer models licensed for reuse, either for free or on the Sketchfab Store, will be required to mark their assets that have been generated using AI as "CreatedWithAI".
If you feel that activity on the site is violating our Terms of Use, you can submit a help request, and if you believe that a user on Sketchfab has violated your intellectual property rights you can report copyright infringement.
What qualifies as a generative AI program?
"Generative AI Programs" are programs that use artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, neural networks, or similar technologies to automate full or partial creation of new models (or other media). Most 3D workflows do not currently rely on generative AI programs and most creators will not be affected by this change in the Terms of Use.
Your models are not considered to be created using Generative AI Programs merely for use of features that solely operate on content (e.g., content-aware fill) or that don't introduce material Generative AI elements into your work (e.g., AI-based image upscaling).
What do I need to do if some of my downloadable assets were made with generative AI programs?
Starting March 23, 2023, if you make your work available under a license that permits redistribution (including as part of a larger work), for example one of the Creative Commons licenses or the standard Sketchfab License Agreement, you will need to tag any of your models that have been made with the use of generative AI programs as "CreatedWithAI".
Here's the easiest way to add the tag: select the lowercase "CreatedWithAI" tag from the list of suggested tags in your model properties pane:
Does Sketchfab or Epic Games have business deals allowing Sketchfab content to be used with generative AI programs?
No. Neither Sketchfab nor Epic Games has any agreements with companies allowing them to use content on our websites in datasets for, in the development of, or as inputs to generative AI programs, and under our latest Terms of Use we aren't allowed to do this.
Are Sketchfab or Epic Games using my work to develop generative AI programs?
No. Sketchfab and Epic Games do not scan artists' or developers' work for generative AI purposes, and under our updated Terms of Use, we're not allowed to do this.
