Desktop WebVR (Vive, Oculus)

You can view any 3D model in Virtual Reality using a WebVR browser and a VR headset like the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift.

Desktop WebVR viewing requires an experimental version of Google Chrome / Chromium with WebVR support. Firefox Nightly builds should also work soon, but have not yet updated to the most recent WebVR API. This technology is very young, and browser support is experimental. You can check browser status and progress at Is WebVR Ready?

We recommend the Latest build of Chromium.
  1. Download and install a compatible browser.
  2. Go to about://flags and turn on the "Enable WebVR" and "Enable Gamepad Extensions" flags.
  3. Turn on your device
  4. Start VR Mode on any Sketchfab model page or use the VR Launcher.

I'm loving the new Cardboard app, really great framerates compared to the WebGL mobile player. Any sense of when we'll be able to push our own content to these apps?

@dskeith - No  ETA at the moment, but the goal is for every Sketchfab model to be viewable in a VR app.

Note 5, Gear VR. Model loads but no navigation, so can only look at one static view of my model. Look forward to your next release. thanks

Hello, Im using the vr Sketchfab app on an iphone5s , I can see the pointer and when trying to select/stare at the circle nothing happens, I have to click it with my finger to activate it. If I look down a navigation menu pops up ( next /previos model - help - home ) I can see that the pointer works because the tab changes color to lightblue and the pointer changes to a circle but it does not click when staring at the lightblue tab.

    Thank you.

Hi @brui, The iOS app is designed to be used with a Google Cardboard, which has a button to click/tap the screen for you. The app is still young, and we'll improve things as we go.

Thank you James for your reply. Yes, I have the Google Cardboard, I tried the magnet click/tap but its not working.

Ah ok, it doesn't work with the magnet button in the Cardboard V1, only the conductive trigger button in Cardboard V2. Sorry!

I see, thanks! For the moment I was able to make it work with this hack, I will have to get the V2 or a plastic visor one that have the same function, I will look around

    @James

I have had feedback from several people who tried to get my animations into the vive via web VR ...i had the chance to try it the other day at a friends place...he is a crack in visuals and with all the programs...

but we could not get it right ...we had steamVR and webVr for chromium installed and everything set...but clicking the VR button in the modelviewer just shows the url to be entered in the mobile...

we tried everything and could not get it...the sketchfab app from steam works fine...and sends nothing to the vive...

do you have any tip for us...what could it be we all are doing wrong ?

    @miguelangelo2k

Are you sure you have "Enable WebVR" enabled in chrome://flags/ ?

  • Avatar
    miguelangelo2k

@James ...yes...Steam VR enabled...web VR enabled...Vive room set and callibrated...

newest driver...super computer with liquidcooled GPU and all...

we tried virtual desktop and the sketchfabe vr app, that works all fine...then we open chrome open model page hit the VR button and all that happens is that the viewer tells us the url for the mobile...

is it maybe possible to do a step by step video ? the people who tried it are all developers and they would sure love to use it...

Having a stange issue here. Trying to view a model in Chrome for Android WebVR mode (turned on in flags), on a Note 3 with Phronesis 6.5 (Android 5.1). Navigation (tumbling) doesn't function unless I'm touching the display. Once I start touching the display, the sensors tilt the view, but as soon as I let go, it's static again.

Anyone seen this sort of thing before?

@dazirius - same thing here. It worked two days ago though. I was able to control the view in VR mode by moving the phone, even without the cardboard. Now it stopped working. Tried few 3D models, two phones (HTC One M9 and Huawei P8 lite), resetting Chrome settings. No luck. Only when I touch the screen, the view tilts according to phone movement. But the performance is poor.

Dear Sketchfab team - did you change anything within the last few days in VR mode maybe? If so - seems something might have gone wrong.

@dazirius @bspc - Sorry about that! Yes, we introduced a bug. Fix is coming ASAP.

Alright @James, I'm intrigued. I retried WebVR on my Note3 tonight and it worked without touching the screen which is great. But pitch was inverted O.O

So.. doesn't work on nightly.. (also version from October 29 is nowhere to be found)

latest version with WebVR plus0.7.0 addon. about:config  everything regarding vr - enabled.

and it doesn't work on chromium (shows skechfabs page as if it wouldn't have css - just plane text. and no model) 56.0.2902.0 version. chrome://flags/ vr - on

can anyone see models in vr?

I am a Rift user with Oculus Touch controllers, WebVR has never worked for me.   I would like to load up my sketchfab models into my HMD but it has never worked through the browser interface. (WebVr seems more tailored for smart phone VR)  The Sketchfab app in the Oculus store is great but it dosn't allow you to access your own models or collections.  When is Sketchfab going to release a complete Rift or Vive stand alone app to view all Sketchfab models uploaded by us creator's and not just there own collection.

@mantasT - Looks like the October 29 version was not added to the Archive folder. Have you tried the latest version (Dec 23) ? The plain text issue is known, but we think it's on Chrome's end. You can find a workaround here: https://forum.sketchfab.com/t/error-in-latest-version-of-chromium/11755

WebVR should be in the native, stable version of Chrome very soon.

@direhawk - Are you using a proper WebVR browser with the flags enabled, as described above?

  • Avatar
    mantasT

@James well still nothing works. Where do i get dec 23 version? Sometimes I find builds with just numbered version,  sometimes with dates.. its just a mess. on the current version of chromium web vr doesn't exist in flags... so nothing to enable.. though the plain text issue seems to be gone. The build that I find in this page - 56.0.2902.0 does allow me to enable webvr. but when i try to see any model in vr pop up tells be that i need to get a browser that supports webvr - and shows a link to this same page..

    James

@mantasT - You can always get the latest version here: https://webvr.info/get-chrome/ (v1.1, 23 December )

@James So last time i tried this build -  pop up told me i need compatible web vr browser.  (with flags enabled) now it doesn't load the model (any model in skechfab) the progress bar appears but doesn't move at all. Is it only for me that it doesn't work? might be it has to do with 64 bit win? but all computers are 64 these days.. win 10 ? cannot figure out whats the problem. And thanks for your help.

    James

@mantasT - I just tried the same build (23 December 2016, 56.0.2902.0, 64-bit, Windows 10, with enable-webvr and enable-gamepad-extensions turned on), and I was able to view models in VR (on a Vive).

    mantasT

@James thanks for trying. I have a rift. But the problem must be somewhere else - cos this build doesn't even load models for me so the problem is before i can even click vr button. Also some images do not load in skechfab web page. So I guess I ll have to wait for official release. Any ideas on when web Vr is coming to firefox/chrome ?

@mantasT - WebVR is supposed to be coming to the stable version of Chrome very soon, but I can't say for sure :\

I'm very disappointed ! I bought an oculus to present my scans uploaded on sketchfab and it does not work at all.

On the WebVr version of Chromium, as MantaT said ("it doesn't work on chromium (shows skechfabs page as if it wouldn't have css - just plane text. and no model) 56.0.2902.0 version. chrome://flags/ vr - on") the sketchfab site just does not display correctly.. I tried with other sites and they all worked.

What is the problem with Sketchfab ? is their another site were we can upload our scans to present them in vr (vr.. real on, with a headset, not a smartphone) ?
    thanks...

It is really an urgent problem for me I need to solve asap.
