Identifying which license you should offer with your 3D models is an extremely important part of selling your work through the Sketchfab Store.
Sketchfab offers two types of royalty-free licenses:
Standard
Editorial
As a valued contributor to our marketplace, we strongly recommend you make sure you use the correct license on your models. This will help buyers more easily discover your models when looking for a specific license.
Standard license
Standard licenses are for generic content that you created as an original creation and can be used for commercial purposes by buyers. This type of content cannot include anything with identifiable branding, logos or designs that may be copyrighted by someone else.
Editorial license
Editorial licenses are for more specific content where you may have created the model based on real-life copyrighted objects and you may not own the original design or associated brand or logo copyright. These types of models are typically licensed on an Editorial basis and can be used for non-commercial projects such as news items or documentaries.
What uses are forbidden?
As a rule of thumb, you may not use the 3D asset in a way that allows others to use or access the 3D asset as a stand-alone.
Some examples of what you cannot do:
You cannot sub-license a purchased model.
You cannot purchase a model and sell it directly to another client/customer.
You cannot purchase a model and offer it as downloadable on your own Sketchfab profile.
You cannot distribute the 3D asset incorporated in a derivative work if the derivative work is too similar to the 3D asset. (An example of this is printing a 3D asset or a slightly modified version of it and selling it.)
You may not use the 3D asset in pornographic, defamatory or otherwise unlawful use. Similarly, you may not use the 3D asset for the direct or indirect promotion of alcoholic beverages, tobacco, gambling, weapons and explosives.
You may not claim you are the creator or copyright holder of a 3D asset you purchased.
Why is my license locked?
Sometimes, you may notice that your license has been "locked" to the Editorial license by a member of Sketchfab's staff. This is typically because we found third-party intellectual property in your model and it must be sold under the Editorial license. If you think there has been a mistake, please contact us.
